Let me start off by saying that I am not pro-Anorexia or pro-Eating Disorders. If you know someone who is suffering from an Eating Disorder, they are in serious risk of destroying their bodies (if they don’t know that already) and may cause death. However, I do realize that I have documented my journey through the process of recovery. If you are reading this (using the keyword “skinny chicks”, “anorexia fan club” or “secrets of skinny chicks”) weblog you will not discover any answer to the following.

Last night, I decided to watch the premiere of “America’s Next Top Model” cycle seven. This post isn’t to discuss the girls, or their photo shoots, or how awkwardly some of them were. The one thing that really stood out in my mind is their choice to go controversial. The girls first photo shoot was on model stereotypes. The dumb blonde, the model turned actress, and of course the Anorexia and Bulmic.

Can anyone understand why I am so outraged?  The media glorifies and glamourizes Eating Disorders. The wannabe models are wearing nice makeup, perfect lighting, etc that reads “you can be this pretty if your Anorexic/Bulmic”. Tyra Banks has probably said she doesn’t enorses Eating Disorders, yet she’s glamorizing them on her show? Explain that one. The Anorexic model is obesessing over her weight using a measuing tape around her wasit, while the Bulmic model is sitting on the toilet with cake smeared on her fingertips, and fingers near her mouth. It’s disgusting. There are people who are suffering, like myself. On the other hand, it’s very satisfying to hear that in Spain, designers are cutting out the too skinny models.

At least something is going right. That’s what should be done here. It’s giving a bad image to the young girls who want to be a model someday. I could go on and on. Maybe I’m the lucky one who chose to save herself. Other than that, what more can I say.

  1. I don’t know what to say either, except I’m going to email whoever runs that show. That is in such poor taste, it’s hard to imagine anyone could think it was acceptable. Even if it was done with the intention of pointing out the non-glamorous side of eating disorders (the glam side being the high buck modeling gigs), it does nothing to help anyone fighting this. Good on you for talking about this!

  2. @Mac,

It’s been put out there by yours truly. If any other blogger wants to comment or reference this, I’d hope they’d track my post and the comments associated with it. Because there’s a reason for it.
